My guess is that when the fluid was changed the previous time, they may have over tightened it with an impact wrench. For now, getting that fixed and will check the front differential in a few hundred miles to see if there is still moisture.
I will probably drain and replace the diff oil every year as a routine maintenance. If you are looking for a bit fancier fluid there are many out there, I have used Motul Gear 300 75-90 diff fluid with good luck. The parts for our fluid replacement will be a few new gaskets for the removed plugs
